Professional, friendly violin/viola tutor in southwest London – all ages welcome!
I am a professional violinist and violist in southwest London, and I offer bespoke violin and viola lessons. I believe that the main objective of teaching an instrument should be to instill a love for music in each student. I have 7 years of teaching experience, having taught both privately and at several schools’ music departments. I teach violin and viola lessons, and have an excellent track record in terms of preparing my students for ABRSM and Trinity practical examinations. In terms of lesson structure, I aim to include repertoire as well as technical work in my lessons, based on each student’s individual needs, abilities and interests. I am trained in the Colourstrings violin teaching method for very young beginners, and have used this with much success. However, I am flexible in this regard and aim to optimise students’ progress by keeping their lessons interesting and varied. Aimée Blom (née Porter) completed her BMus (2014-2017) and MMus (2018-2019) studies cum laude at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, under the guidance of Johanna Roos and Irene Tsoniff. She was awarded the Medal of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal as the overall top achiever in the Faculty of Humanities in 2017.
Her name appears on the Roll of Honour for Outstanding Achievers of the University of South Africa (UNISA) for all her violin and piano examinations. She has received multiple bursaries and scholarships, including the Ellie Marx Memorial Scholarship, David Reunert Bursary, SAMRO Music Bursaries, UP Postgraduate Masters Research Bursaries, as well as the Anton & Huberte Rupert Bursary. In 2016 and 2017 respectively, Aimée completed the DipABRSM and LRSM examinations in violin performance, and obtained both with distinction.
Aimée has taken violin masterclasses with, inter alia, Zanta Hofmeyr (South Africa), Antoinette Lohmann (Netherlands), Daniel Rowland (UK), Alissa Margulis (Germany), Frank Stadler (Austria), Madeline Adkins (USA), Nicolas Dautricourt (France), Louise Lansdown (UK), Max Baillie (UK), and Fredrik Burstedt (Sweden).
During 2019 and 2021, Aimée was leader of the Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra (GPO). She was also leader of the University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra (UPSO) for two years (2014 and 2015). She has taken part in the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF) numerous times, and has also been a member of the South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO). Aimée was a tutti first violinist in the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) between 2019 and 2021.
Aimée is an active chamber musician and was between 2015 and 2021 a permanent member of the established piano trio, Les Trois, which was awarded first prize in the open category of the National SASMT Pretoria Ensemble Competition in both 2018 and 2019. She also plays the viola as third instrument.
She was appointed as a part-time violin and viola teacher at the Pro Arte Music Academy in Pretoria from 2018 to 2019. During 2019, she also gave violin lessons on a part-time basis at Laerskool Anton van Wouw, Pretoria. Aimée currently teaches violin and viola privately in southwest London.
In April 2021, Aimée and her husband immigrated to the UK on Ancestry Visas, which permit them to live and work in the UK.

She is a patient and a professional teacher. I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn violin whether as a hobby or on a professional level.
